About Us

How We Came To Be

The formation of the East York Probus Club was sponsored by the Toronto Probus Club which, at the time, had a large membership wait list.

Several members of Toronto Probus (John Agnew, Hilary Bartlett, Andrea Ferrier, Adele Freeman, Jan Forstner, Gaylen Racine, Colin Smith and Naomi St. John) thought Toronto could support another Probus club and formed an exploratory committee. The members of this committee organized a meeting to determine interest in the Leaside neighbourhood of Toronto.

On November 22, 2017, more than 150 people attended the meeting at St. Cuthbert’s Anglican Church. That day, 134 people became members and an interim Management Committee consisting of the original planning group was established. The Club hosted its first official meeting on December 20, 2017, and adopted the standard Probus Club constitution and bylaws. On February 21, 2018, the first official Management Committee was elected and Hilary Bartlett, President of the Toronto Probus Club, presented President Dina Papadopoulos with the Club’s charter and Certificate of Accreditation.

Within the first year, the membership grew to the current maximum of 300 members and the waiting list quickly grew to its current maximum of 100 names.

Many charter members are still active members of the East York Probus Club.

Volunteer Opportunities

As an entirely volunteer-based organization, the East York Probus Club members play a fundamental role in creating a vital and meaningful Probus club.

There are many ways members can volunteer to help in all areas including leadership, operations, special events organization and activity group leaders!

Specifically, we offer the following volunteer opportunities:

  • Management Committee member
  • Activity Group Leaders (Convenors)
  • Communications (including this website).

In addition, there are many ad hoc opportunities to volunteer.

Participating is easy. Just contact a member of the Management Committee.

What We Do / Activities

The East York Probus Club offers a wide variety of activities and social events that provide the opportunity to continue to learn, to engage in stimulating conversation and to explore the community with new friends.

In addition to a monthly general meeting, members can choose from a large number of events and outings each year, and, on a more regular basis, members can join one or more of 35 small activity groups tailored to current or emerging interests.

The East York Probus Club website keeps members informed about what’s going on and provides the opportunity to register for activities and special events.

Monthly General Membership Meetings

The monthly general meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. at St. Cuthbert’s Anglican Church, 1399 Bayview Avenue, Toronto from September to June.  In July and August, the meetings are held via Zoom.

Each meeting starts with club business, a time to socialize over refreshments, then is followed by an engaging guest speaker sure to stimulate a lively discussion.

Special Events

A “special event” is a one-off outing or adventure open to all members (and where space permits, to those on the waitlist). It might be a group outing to the theatre, a wine tasting trip, amusic concert, a behind the scenes tour of a unique building or business, museum exhibits, or even a multi-day adventure to an international destination. Popular special events have included a tour of theOntario Legislature, a cooking class in a local professional kitchen, and the annual St. Patrick’s Day party. There truly is something for everyone.

Ideas come from members’ suggestions and vary widely in content and location.

Activity Groups

Activity groups are the heart and soul of our club with gatherings to appeal to all interests. There are many individual activity groups ranging from physical activities (walking, pickleball, golf) to entertainment activities (movies, music, pub, lunch bunch, gourmet dinner clubs, wine tasting), to special interest activities (bridge, book club, scabble, investing).

Indeed, there is something for everyone and if you find a gap, we’d encourage you to start an activity group!
