Palace Intrigues

All eyes on the British monarchy prompt us to reflect on what recent events mean in the historical context. Beneath the glamorous displays of formal state occasions lie the memories of palace tumult and intrigue. Versions of such tumult and intrigues are presented in this week's two movie selections. Let's watch (or re-watch) and discuss.

Elizabeth 1998

The last Tudor, Queen Elizabeth I, “Good Queen Bess” was queen of England and Ireland for 44 years, but not yet Scotland. This was her biggest challenge. Religious differences and power struggles were mortal matters in this century, and Cate Blanchett leads an all-star cast in the struggle with Mary, Queen of Scotland and her religious rivals.

The Favorite 2018

Two very determined and ruthless women compete for the attentions of Queen Anne, who is more receptive to advice and attention of a personal confidante then to matters of state. It's an epic court struggle between cousins Abigail and Sarah to be favoured. It all unfolds in glamorous Hatfield House, Hertfordshire.
